I primarily use charcoal for preparatory sketches for paintings. But sometimes it's just fun to get back to drawing...like when I was a kid in church learning to draw on the bulletin during the sermon.
My dad, Jack, was a big personality and beloved by many people in our hometown of Greensboro, NC. I created this charcoal sketch on Father's Day from an old photo of he and my mom, Muriel. The picture was taken on their honeymoon in Mexico where my father was playing winter baseball during the off-season while away from the Brooklyn Dodgers farm league. I framed this piece and exhibited at the Conroe Art League in July, 2017. It now hangs in my office and I am pleasantly reminded of him everyday.
Not sure why I chose this subject. Probably due to my interest in the John Singer Sargent works with Spanish themes. I finished this relatively quickly in one afternoon. I exhibited it at the Conroe Art League in July '17. It now hangs in our home.
Stefini modeled for this shoot of a woman in robe. This charcoal piece was meant to be a study for a subsequent painting in a renaissance style. The painting has languished unfinished for several years but was recently reworked and expected to be finished soon. The title, Saint Laura, is a reference of honor for someone who had great influence on my wife when she was a young girl.
